AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State athletics department has announced the hiring of Amy Knowles as volleyball associate head coach under ISU head coach Linda Crum. She joins third-year assistant coach Trent Herman to round out Crum's staff.
Knowles comes to Iowa State after a six year stint as the head coach at Oral Roberts University where she led the Golden Eagles to six consecutive Mid-Continent Conference titles and six NCAA Tournament appearances. Knowles compiled a 143-59 overall record at Oral Roberts and earned Mid-Continent Co-Coach of the Year honors in 1998 after leading the Golden Eagles to a season-best 29-6 record. Last season, Knowles led the team to a 22-11 overall record and to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
"I am extremely excited to have Amy join our program," Crum said. "She brings a great deal of experience as a former player in the Big 12 Conference and with her background as a head coach. She's going to bring a lot to this program and we're glad to have her here at Iowa State."
Prior to Oral Roberts, Knowles spent the 1996 season as the head coach at Northeastern Illinois University where the team finished with a 6-28 overall record. She also served as the assistant coach at Oklahoma from 1992-96. In her time there, the OU volleyball team appeared in its first National Invitational Volleyball Championship, finishing third.
Knowles was a standout volleyball player for Oklahoma from 1987-91. She was selected as the team's captain in 1991 and was a member of the Big Eight all-conference team that same year. In her career, Knowles led the Sooners in digs in 1990 and was third in the Big Eight in that same category. She was fifth among OU career leaders for most aces in a game.
Knowles, a 1991 graduate of Oklahoma, and her husband Philip have a daughter, Allana.
