AMES, Iowa - Curtis Stinson, playing with his right shoulder heavily wrapped, scored 17 points and had a career-high 12 assists, leading Iowa State to a 73-46 victory over Drake on Tuesday night.
Jared Homan and freshman Rahshon Clark each had 14 points for the Cyclones, who were sharp on both ends of the court in their opener. Another freshman, Tasheed Carr, had 11 points for Iowa State, while Homan grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots.
With Stinson setting up his teammates for easy baskets, Iowa State shot 65.5 percent in the first half and 55 percent for the game.
Drake (1-1) beat Akron 90-88 in its opener but was overmatched in this one. The Bulldogs shot only 31.6 percent against Iowa State's aggressive full-court defense and had more turnovers (23) than baskets (18).
Pete Eggers led Drake with 11 points.
Iowa State played without starting point guard Will Blalock, serving a one-game suspension for playing in an unsanctioned summer league game, but had little trouble with the press that's a staple of Drake coach Tom Davis' system.
The Cyclones frequently beat the Bulldogs down the floor for layups and they always had Stinson to fall back on. The freshman of the year in the Big 12 last season, Stinson has been bothered by a sore shoulder, but it didn't seem to slow him at all.
During one stretch in the first half, Stinson fed Homan for a dunk in transition, hit a pull-up jumper and fired a one-hand pass off the dribble to Homan for a layup. Moments later, Stinson hit a 3-pointer from the right corner and Carr followed with a 3 to make it 27-11.
Iowa State scored the final eight points of the first half to stretch its lead to 43-19. With time running out in the half, Stinson dribbled into traffic, looked as if he was going to lose the ball, then hit a turnaround shot.
Stinson, who also had six rebounds and three steals, got his 11th assist on a crisp bounce pass through a crowd of players to Carr of a layup that made it 59-25. Assist No. 12 came on a lob to Damion Staple for a dunk. He left the game for good with 3:39 remaining, the best thing that happened to Drake all night.
