AMES, Iowa - Senior Sam Dyshaw broke her own school record in the 50 freestyle with a NCAA consideration time of 22.98 to place second on Thursday evening at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. The Cyclones are currently in fourth place with 162 points.
"Sam's time in the 50 freestyle should get her invited to the NCAA Championships," said head coach Duane Sorenson. "We're very excited with how we're swimming. Not only did Sam break a school record tonight, but our 200 medley relay team (1:42.78) broke the school record last night. The divers also did an outstanding job on the 1-meter board today."
Also in the 50 freestyle, junior Brita Benson swam a time of 23.60 to place 11th and senior Kim Schmugge tied with Nebraska's Alex King for 19th place (24.00). Freshman Cassandra Nelson came in 22nd with a time of 24.26 and junior Jenny Lindberg swam a time of 24.69 to place 24th.
In the 500 freestyle, senior Lara Skoog recorded a time of 4:58.76 to place 11th. Freshman Chelsey Walden finished 14th with a time of 5:00.67.
Freshman Lauren Breunig swam a NCAA consideration time of 2:03.08 to finish ninth in the 200 individual medley.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Breunig, Schmugge, Dyshaw and Benson also recorded a NCAA consideration time of 1:33.02 to place fourth.
In diving, senior Linda Wagner placed third on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 265.00. Sophomore Hillary Nichols finished seventh with a total of 243.90 points. Junior Gail Olson came in 12th place with a preliminary score of 218.45.
Competition will resume at 10 a.m. on Friday with finals beginning at 6 p.m. Results after each event will be posted on www.texassports.com.
