TULSA, Okla. - The Iowa State women's tennis team wrapped up its third day of competition at the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships Friday at the Michael D. Case Center in Tulsa, Okla., with a solid performance by senior Danielle Uscinski.
Uscinski defeated Marta Gomez-Jordana of Arkansas-Little Rock in two sets and a deciding tiebreaker (1-6, 6-3, (10-3) to advance in the consolation bracket. Uscinski then went on to defeat Kansas State's Natasha Vieira 4-6, 6-4, (10-4). Uscinski will continue play in the championship on Saturday.
Senior Jill Palen, who defeated Missouri's Erika Josbena (1-6, 6-4, 6-4) in the first round, fell to the No. 6 seed, Santie Delport of Tulsa in the second round, (6-2, 6-1). The loss moved Palen's fall singles record to 7-4.
Sophomore Kara Hickey, who was riding a five-match winning streak into Friday's match, fell to Oklahoma State's Natalia Shatkovskaya (6-3, 6-2) in the second round. The loss moved Hickey's fall singles record to 9-5. The Columbia, Mo., native advanced to the second round by upsetting the 13th-seeded player in the Central Regional Championships.
