AMES, Iowa - Senior Ada Anderson finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.9382. The race was the closest of the day with only 13-one-thousandths of a second separating her and the winner of the event Althea Chambers of Texas Tech.
"I was pleased with the overall race. Obviously I was disappointed, I ran the best I could," said Anderson. "My goal for nationals is to get All-American and place in the top 3."
Both times broke the Big 12 meet record of 2:07.22. Chambers will hold the meet record of 2:06.94. It was a judge's decision that Anderson would receive the second-place finish.
"Ada did about all she could do," said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. "She had a little stumble at the finish, but she did a fantastic job. She was one of the fastest, but just wasn't able to pull it off. We're looking towards running next week back on our track and then also at nationals."
"Ada ran a gutsy race," said women's head track coach Dick Lee. "She stumbled at the finish and it took them forever to read the picture. I feel bad for her. She had it won without that stumble but she has another shot at it in the outdoor season and she ran a great time today.
Cyclone jumper Tony Douglas took second place in the triple jump after a disappointing performance in the long jump on Friday.
"I'm really proud of Tony and how he bounced back," said McEachran. "He's a senior veteran and he responded well. He's been through this before and knew what he had to do to comeback today. Coach Lynn helped him try to get adjusted with the board after the prelims so he could jump better in the finals. Tony adjusted well and kept his head together." Douglas leaped 50-6 to finish the day, after Nebraska's Daniel Roper won the event with a jump of 50-9 ½.
"I knew I had to do something big today after last night," Douglas said. "My prelim jumps (triple) were off so I was just trying to get into finals so I could work it out. My final jumps felt good and it was really fun to compete and perform better."
After breaking the school record in the prelims of the 1,000 meters, Cyclone David Rotich broke it again with a time of 2:22.80. Rotich placed third overall in the event against tough competition including Kansas State's Christian Smith who is the collegiate record holder in the event. Smith won the event with a time of 2:21.28.
"His time was good and at the Big 12 meet it's all about placing," said distance coach Corey Ihmels. "I am a little disappointed. I thought he could've been in the top two but he got bumped coming off the last curve and lost some momentum. This was a good first conference meet for David and we're going to get him to nationals next weekend."
Overall Rotich was pleased with his performance, but had hoped for a better place. He was happiest not to have the school record looming on his mind today.
"Last night I was nervous because I wasn't sure how fast the prelim would be," said Rotich. "I was wishing and hoping I would get the record because I didn't want to worry about it today. I wanted to be able to just go out and race and not have the record on my mind. Today I was in good position the whole race and then at the last 50-meter mark I was bumped and I couldn't get back in it. Overall the race felt good and I'm happy with my performance."
Another strong performance for Iowa State came from junior Elijah Braimah. Braimah, who has only competed once since the Iowa State Open (Jan. 28), placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.16.
"Elijah is one that I am really proud of because he has only run one race since he hasn't run much this season," said men's head track coach Steve Lynn. "He had an injury after the Open and he came here this weekend and ran four quality races."
Hurdler Rebecca Williams took eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.59. Williams came into the finals today with the fourth fastest time but felt off with the start of the race.
"Sometimes you have it and sometimes you don't," said Roberts. "She's looking to run fast next weekend at the NCAA Qualifier. Yesterday she ran her second fastest time ever and then today she just felt a little off."
Senior Erica Lynn had another successful day as she brought in points for Iowa State in the high jump. Lynn placed eighth after clearing 5-8.
"This competition was amazing today," said jumps coach Ron MacEachran. "To be in the top eight is darn good and I'm happy for Erica. She put forth a great effort once again today and she has had a phenomenal meet."
In the second day of competition, Cyclone Neil Hines finished the heptathlon in seventh place with 5,276 points.
"Neil competed really hard today and pulled out his best second day performance," coach Lynn said. "Hopefully we can get to nationals and he can put a good first day together with a good second day.
In the overall team competition, the men finished 11th with 26 points and the women finished 12th with 19 points. The University of Texas swept both titles.
"We're better outdoors than indoors and we're not satisfied right now," coach Lynn said. "We've got to get back to work and build from here."
