MINNEAPOLIS-- Coming off a tough start with losses to Notre Dame on Aug. 26, and Drake on Aug. 28, the Cyclone soccer team looks to pick up its first win this weekend. Iowa State plays at Minnesota (2-0-0) on Friday and at Northwestern (1-1-0) on Sunday in the Big 12/ Big Ten Challenge.

Scouting the Gophers
Last weekend Minnesota shut out two consecutive opponents for the first time since Oct. 2-7, 2005, beating Drake, 3-0, and North Dakota State, 2-0. The Gophers pushed their home unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents to 14. Last weekend, Kaitlin Wagner scored the third goal of her career against Drake. Freshman Elena Fruci scored the first goals of her career; one against Drake and two against NDSU.

Scouting the 'Cats
Northwestern enters the match with a 1-1-0 overall record. The 'Cats picked up their first win of the season, Aug. 25, at DePaul with a 2-1 victory. Junior Shannon Schneeman leads Northwestern with four points on two goals this season after sitting out last season due to injury. Junior forward Kelsey Hans sets the pace for the 'Cats with nine shots, seven of them on goal. Northwestern has outshot its opponents 33-16 and has given up three goals this season. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Johnston enters the match with nine saves and 1.42 goals-against average.
Cyclone Freshmen
Iowa State has seen a spark from its newest players, especially Elise Reid and Amanda Nimtz. The nationally ranked recruiting class is second in the Big 12 Conference and 26th nationally. In the home opener-against Drake, Reid served a free kick into the box that found fellow freshman Nimtz for the header-goal, her first of the season.
