Cyclones Make Presence Felt in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas ? Karly Pinder was among the top competitors and helped guide the Iowa State women's golf team at the first day of action in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational Friday. The Cyclones fired a 314 to tie for sixth with Iowa and Notre Dame in the 15-team field. Host school Texas has a three-stroke lead over 27th ranked TCU and 24th ranked Arkansas. Longhorn Kelley Louth was 3-under par on the day with a 69 and has the early lead in the medalist race.
Pinder kept ISU in the thick of the team standings, scoring two birdies in the first nine holes. The junior registered eight straight pars but ended with a double bogey to finish 3-over par on the day. She carded a total of 75 and is tied with five others for seventh place.
Pennapa Pulsawath did not deviate from her consistent spring season, wrapping up the first day with a 78. The freshman rebounded from bogeys in her first four of five holes to birdie holes 13 and 15 on the back nine to finish her day at 6-over par. Pulsawath has ISU's top finish in its two spring events. She tied for 24th with seven other individuals.
Senior Christi Athas played herself into a tie for 40th after shooting an 8-over par first round. Athas recorded an 80 and was 8-over par on the day. Jessica Shin was one stroke off Athas, shooting an 81 and tying for 46th. Kendra Hanson scored two birdies on the back nine to finish with an 82 and tie for 54th.
Freshman Ana North made her Iowa State debut, competing individually. North kept pace with the tournament field, tying Shin and six others for 46th. North opened with a triple bogey but followed up with birdies on holes four and six. A native of Rock Island, Ill., she finished 4-over par on the back nine with six pars.
