In the latest CYber CYd for the gymnastics team, senior Ashley Kent gives a unique perspective for Cyclone fans. The Calgary, Alberta native, looks at each event and tells fans what they can look forward to seeing this season. Check back next Thursday when Megan Barnes provides the next CYber CYd.
Hey Cyclone fans!
The last month has been very exciting in the gym! Did everyone know there are only eight weeks until our first meet at home against Missouri? We can't wait to get out there and see our hard work pay off. As the season quickly approaches, I would like to share with you all what we see in the gym every day. I'm going to go through each event and give a few little insights on what you can look forward to seeing.
By far, our biggest improvement from last year has been our increased depth in the line-ups. We only lost one senior last year, Kristy "Yam" Bellinger, and lots of our starting routines are back for more this year. Depth gives us so many more opportunities to keep people healthy through our long season.
Vault:
Starting on vault, we have seven returners that saw competition experience last year, three freshmen that are in contention for the line-ups as well as Alex Grant and Jody McKellar, both with 10.0 vaults. I love that we're going to begin home meets on vault because I think it'll give us a great start to the meet. Megan Barnes has a great vault that earned her third place at Big 12s last year which is an awesome punch in the line up!
Bars:
Bars is where we can be a force to be reckoned with. We have seven returners, and two girls, Jasmine Thompson and Megan Barnes, with upgraded routines. We look to improve on some inconsistencies from last year right out of the gate in January! Look for a full-twisting double layout in the line-up!
Beam:
Next is beam and with over half the team who have seen some competition on the event, we have extraordinary choices of who we can put in. Maybe they'll let us compete a few extras for fun! Some people say, "win beam and you'll win the meet!" That might not be completely true, but we're out to win this event for sure! With unique skills by Katie Sweetin (two back-handsprings to a back pike and the "Sweetin" named after herself), and a few others, expect some awesome routines this year.
Floor:
Lastly on floor, we have eight returners that have seen competition. Just like vault we have Jody Mckellar and Alex Grant back to action and all three freshmen will be in close contention for a spot in the line-up. Look for a double layout this year! Another exciting thing about floor is several new routines created by our assistant coach, TeShawne Jackson. Just when you think she can't get any better, another masterpiece is created! Get excited for fan favorite-Jasmine Thompson's new routine!
We can't wait to see you all in January! We'll keep working hard and keep you updated on our progress so we can make you proud this year.
GO CYCLONES!
