“All four women swam outstanding, our goal was to have four people have one great time so I was pleased with how they performed,” said Sorenson. “We didn't start the meet out very strong but as the meet went along we got stronger so I was pleased the way we came back tonight in the last race.”
The victory was not all that Calzada did on the night. Calzada started the evening session anchoring the fifth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.32) and also finished fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.19).
“Frances Calzada did well in both sessions,” said Sorenson. “She did well in both of her prelim 50 free and her final. She also anchored both relays in really good times.”
Other top ten performances included sophomores Jenny Vondenkamp and Megan Thompson finishing eighth (5:05.19) and tenth (5:08.65) respectively in the 500 freestyle. Junior Lindsey Behrens posted a fifth in the 200 IM and junior Abby Glaser finished ninth in the 50 freestyle (24.97).
In 1-meter diving, junior Tien Tran lost the lead on the last dive of the event and finished second to
“The last dive she did has been one of her pivotal dives,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick. “It is one of her tougher dives and it is a tough dive overall. If she sticks it she wins it and I predict that she gets that dive by the end of the season.”
Warrick was still pleased with the performance of Tran overall.
“She did great, she was a little off here and there,” said Warrick. “She is not holding back and she is going for the dives so that is a good sign. She scored around 271, which is where she has been all season.”
Senior Kali Fryklund finished 11th and freshman Jenn Botsch took 14th. The trio of sophomores Abby Christensen and Justine Anders as well as freshman Lauren Naeve took 18th, 19th, 20th respectively.
“Kali had a rough day for her, she knows she can do better but she gave her all,” said Warrick. “This was Jenn's third day back on the boards so I was impressed with how she performed.”
The Cyclones continue tomorrow with prelims starting at 9 a.m. and finals beginning at 4 p.m.
