IRVING, Texas - Iowa State 197-pounder Jake Varner has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season, it was announced Monday. It is the fourth Conference honor of Varner's career.
Varner was on his game Sunday for the dual matchup between the second-ranked Cyclones and No. 3 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. Varner took the mat with the Cyclones down, 15-14, and pinned seventh-ranked Cowboy Alan Gelogaev at the 4:43 mark by way of a cradle. Iowa State bested OSU, 20-18. The pin was Varner's 10th victory by fall this season. On Jan. 22, he also defeated Oklahoma's sixth-ranked Eric Lapotsky, 9-3 in ISU's 21-12 triumph over the Sooners. The victories improve Varner's record to a pristine 20-0 in his senior campaign.
Cyclone wrestlers have earned league honors four times during the 2009-10 season. ISU 125-pounder Andrew Long notched the award Jan. 4, and Cyclone 184-pounder Jerome Ward followed with his honor Jan. 11. Varner was previously honored Dec. 21.
Last season, ISU wrestlers earned a school-record five Big 12 Wrestler of the Week/Month awards.
