AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women golfers spent the week preparing for the 2016 NCAA Shoal Creek Regional, May 5-7 at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Cyclones, ranked 19th nationally by Golfweek, are making their seventh-straight NCAA Regional appearance. ISU will try and earn its second NCAA Championship berth in school history. The Cyclones advanced to the finals for the first time two years ago (2014).
To get back to the national finals, which will be held at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon, May 20-25, the Cyclones will have to finish among the top six squads at the Shoal Creek Regional. The top six teams in each of the four regionals and the low three individuals not among the top six teams will advance to the NCAA finals.
ISU is the No. 5 seed at the Shoal Creek Regional.
The Cyclones possess one of their deepest lineups in the Christie Martens era. Five different Cyclones have placed in the top-10 at total of 12 times this season and three Cyclones are currently ranked in the top-150 in the Golfweek rankings.
Freshman Chayanit Wangmahaporn, who is ranked 57th nationally, leads the team in stroke average at 72.73, which is on pace to break the single-season school record. Wangmahaporn also has a team-high four top-10 finishes.
Sophomore Celia Barquin is second on the team in stroke average at 73.27 and has three top-10 finishes. Barquin is ranked No. 98 in the latest Golfweek rankings.
Senior Cajsa Persson will play in the postseason for the fourth time in her career. Persson led the Cyclones at the Big 12 Championship, placing in the top-10 for the third time in her career.
