AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team closed out their 2017 fall schedule with a pair of wins over Indian Hills Community College on Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones were dominant, winning game one 22-0, followed by a 7-0 victory in game two.
The Cyclones played a nine-inning contest in game one, before an abbreviated seven-inning game to finish the day.
Iowa State 22, Indian Hills 0
The Cyclones were able to open the game up early on offense, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Nychole Antillon and Logan Schaben opened the frame with back-to-back walks. Kaila Konz and Hannah Carter then collected consecutive base hits, scoring Antillon. Sami Williams also singled later in the inning to plate two more runs.
Junior Sydney Stites then smashed a lead-off home run to left center in the third, as the offense continued to produce. With two outs in the inning, and Antillon and Carter on the corners, the Cyclones pulled off a double steal, with Antillon coming to score again. Taylor Nearad picked up an RBI double on the ensuing at-bat to extend the lead to 6-0.The Cyclones tacked on three more runs in the fourth, aided by two Warrior errors, and another in the sixth on an RBI double by Williams, scoring Stites, as ISU led 10-0 through six innings.
Iowa State then exploded for 12 runs in a wild seventh inning that included 12 base hits, four doubles and ended with the Cyclones leading 22-0. Williams launched a bases-clearing, three-RBI double in the frame, followed by a two-RBI double by Sally Woolpert. In total, the Cyclones racked up 22 base hits in the game, led by Carter and Williams, who both went 4-of-6 at the plate and combined for five RBIs.
In the circle, Savannah Sanders was equally dominant for the Cyclones, pitching 7.0 innings before being relieved by fellow junior Emma Hylen. Sanders surrendered no runs on just two hits in the outing, and also rang up three strikeouts. Hylen gave up no runs on just one hit in 2.0 innings.
Iowa State 7, Indian Hills 0
Game two was another combined shut out, as this time freshman starter Julie Lewis teamed up with senior Brianna Weilbacher to stymie the Indian Hills offense. Lewis, aided by a strong defensive effort, pitched the first five innings, giving up no runs and just two hits. Weilbacher entered and cleaned up in the final two frames, allowing just one base runner on a walk.
Offensively, freshman Bryn Hanrahan helped jump-start things in the bottom of the third inning, with a lead-off single down the left field line. Following a walk for Kaila Konz, Nearad roped an RBI single to left field, scoring Hanrahan. Consecutive base-hits for Williams and Stites later scored Konz, before Williams raced home from third on an IHCC passed ball. Bosworth later collected an RBI on a ground-out, scoring Stites, to give ISU a 4-0 lead at the end of the inning.
The Cyclones generated two more runs in the fourth inning on just one hit, thanks to double steal that scored Hanrahan from third, followed by another run by Konz on an Indian Hills fielding error. Iowa State plated the final run of the day in the sixth, as Schaben walked with one out, and eventually came around to score on a pair of passed balls, giving the Cyclones the 7-0 victory.
