AMES, Iowa – Led by a Big 12 title for Jhoanmy Luque, Iowa State had a strong day one of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The Cyclones were able to convert three-fourths of its prelims runs into finals berths for tomorrow, and put up a good number of points in the team standings.
After one day, ISU is fifth in the women's team race with 26 points, and the men are seventh with 20 points.
After a couple of seasons of close calls, Jhoanmy Luque finally got the elusive Big 12 title. A three-time All-American in 2016, the Venezuelan had a huge day in the women's long jump. Already a contender on paper, Luque made it known she was going to be near the top of the leaderboard with a first jump of 21-1 1/4, which she repeated on her second effort. Her third leap was the best and the winner, as she flew a career-best 21-5 1/4, only one-quarter of an inch of the school record.
Luque picked up her first conference title, ISU's first in the women's indoor long jump. Her winning leap of 21-5 1/4 also sealed her second berth at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in two weeks, as she now ranks third in Division I as of the time of publication. Heading into the weekend, she was ranked No. 4 in the nation in the triple jump.
Christabel Okeke had the best day of her young Cyclone career to pick up the weight throw bronze medal. On paper, she was supposed to be battling just to get into the final, but she made sure her presense was known immediately. Her second throw was a big one, resulting in a big scream from the Cyclone junior. The measurement was a beauty, 62-1 1/4, two-and-a-half feet past her previous best. Her fourth throw (61-2) and sixth throw (61-4) were also beyond her previous best throws. Ariana Kuhn took fifth with a best-toss of 61-5.
On the men's side, ISU had a strong finish to the day, grabbing a 3-4 finish in the 5,000 and taking third in the distance medley relay. The duo of Kevyn Hoyos and Andrew Jordan did the work in the 5K, working their way from the back into to the lead pack in the final laps. The distance medley relay team of Zach Black, Ben Kelly, Christian DeLago and Dan Curts closed out the evening with a third-place run in 9:49.00.
The Cyclone men will have a great chance to make some noise in the 600-yard run final tomorrow, as all three of their entrants made the final. Jaymes Dennison will be the No. 1 seed, with his 1:08.97 being the fastest time of prelims. Roshon Roomes was not far behind, crossing in third at 1:09.76. Derek Jones made the 600-yard final for a second-straight season, taking sixth in prelims at 1:10.37. Dennison's mark ranks third in school history, Roomes is sixth and Jones just missed the top-10 by .02 seconds.
