AMES, Iowa – Iowa State closed out the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships with a bang, as ISU crowned a pair of individual champions Saturday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The Cyclones saw Jhoanmy Luque earn her second title of the weekend, this one in the women's triple jump, and Jaymes Dennison get his first career conference crown in the 600-yard run.
Combined with her long jump title yesterday, Luque earned the High-Point Scorer Award for 2017, with her 20 team points she scored. Luque's win marks the third time ISU has won the award, joining Betsy Saina's in 2012 and 2013.
Luque sent another huge message in the women's triple jump, starting out the competition with a 43-5 3/4, and followed that up with an improved second leap of 43-7 3/4. Her third leap was one that grabbed the headlines, as she flew 44-9 1/2 into an unassailable lead. The leap was a personal best by over three inches and moved her up to No. 3 in the country on the season. The Venezuelan only attempted one more jump, her victory secured.
Dennison came into the 600-yard run as one of the favorites, needing to knock off 2016 U.S. Olmypian Byron Robinson in the process. The two were in separate heats, with Robinson setting the bar at 1:09.54. The drama was tight, as the splits were coming in evenly, but Dennison was able to get under it at the finish line, crossing in 1:09.35 for the win. This was ISU's first Big 12 title in the 600-yard run. Dennison would go on to anchor the men's 4x400 team that finished fourth in 3:07.94.
Kevyn Hoyos added to his bronze medal collection with a third-place finish in the men's 3,000 at 8:05.75. The time, which moves him into No. 10 in ISU history in the event, came in a fast 3,000 final that saw Hoyos hang tough with the lead-pack of six, eventually kicking his way to bronze.
The Cyclone women picked up a pair of silver medals in the women's 800 and women's 1,000. The 800 saw Jasmine Staebler in a showdown with NCAA Indoor mile record holder Kaela Edwards of Oklahoma State. Staebler tried to make a move at the start of the final lap, but Edwards was able to counter and pull away for the win. Staebler came home strong in second with a 2:05.94.
In the women's 1,000, Evelyne Guay put up a very strong performance to get a personal best of 2:46.52 to earn her silver medal. The finish was the highest of Guay's Big 12 career and moved her up to No. 4 in school history for the event.
