DES MOINES, Iowa – It was a good start to the Drake Relays for Iowa State's multi-eventers Wednesday at Drake Stadium. After the first day of action, Emma Whigham recorded a career-best day one heptathlon score of 3,068 to put her in third place overall. Meanwhile, Wyatt Rhoads' 3,333 day one points has him in eighth place in the decathlon.
Emma Whigham had the best first day of her heptathlon career, sitting in third place after day one with 3,068 points. Whigham began the day with a 14.45 in the 100 hurdles, just missing her career-best mark of 14.43. In the high jump, the sophomore posted an outdoors personal best with a clearance of 5-1 3/4 and followed with a 30-11 3/4 in the shot put. She closed the day in style with her best event, the 200-meter dash, as she sped to a season-best mark of 24.24.
Whigham's 3,068 points is 10 better than her previous day one best of 3,058 at the USATF Junior National Championships she recorded in June 2016.
In the decathlon, Wyatt Rhoads' day got off to a strong start with a wind-legal personal best of 11.38 in the 100-meter dash. After a 20-6 1/2 in the long jump, and a 32-4 3/4 in the shot put, Rhoads just missed out on a personal best in the high jump by a quarter of an inch as he posted a 5-11 1/4. The sophomore closed out the afternoon with a strong 50.39 in the 400 to win his heat.
Rhoads' 3,333 points puts him on par with his day one scoring in his ISU career. It is behind his 3,357 he had at the Jim Click Shootout earlier this month, and his 3,342 at the Big 12 Championships last season, but better than his totals from 2016's Drake Relays (3,130) and Jim Click Shootout (3,318).
