TEMPE, Arizona – Iowa State's men's middle distance runners put up an impressive performance Saturday night at the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State. Jaymes Dennison and Roshon Roomes were put up against an elite field in the men's 800-meter run, but showed they belonged with two of the top-six times in school history in the half-mile.
The Iowa State duo of Jaymes Dennison and Roshon Roomes have been a revolution so far in 2017, and another chapter was added to that saga on Saturday in the 800-meter run Premiere. Dennison started slower, going 52.50 in his first 400, but he finished stronger, pushing his way from the back-of-the-pack to fifth in 1:47.63. Roomes went out a little quicker, clocking his first 400 in 51.71, but still held on to take seventh in 1:47.69.
The duo now rank fifth and sixth in Iowa State history. ISU's school record holder in the 800, Edward Kemboi, was also in the field and took second place in 1:46.47.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Logan Schneider and Elijah Young both continued their strong seasons with season-best marks. Schneider went 14.45 to finish eighth, while Young clocked in at 14.50 to take 10th.
On the women's side, six-time All-American Jhoanmy Luque made her season debut with a pair of fourth-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. Luque, the sitting Big 12 indoor champion in the two events, started her season off with a 19-7 3/4 in the long jump and a 41-9 3/4 in the triple jump.
