TULSA, Okla. – The first session of the second day at the Big 12 Championship produced five more NCAA qualifiers for the Cyclones in Alex Mackall, Austin Gomez, Ian Parker, Marcus Coleman and Gannon Gremmel, bringing the Cyclone total to eight on the weekend. After the third and fifth-place medal matches, the Cyclones remained in second place as a team with 113.5 team points.
At 125 pounds, No. 5 Alex Mackall rolled to a third-place finish in Tulsa. He opened up the session with an 8-5 victory over UNI's No. 3 Jay Schwarm, avenging a loss suffered in the dual this season. He dominated OU's No. 7 Christian Moody in the third-place bout via 18-3 technical fall. Mackall's only loss of the weekend came in the quarterfinals. He recorded a 4-0 record on the backside of the bracket.
No. 2 Austin Gomez also posted a third-place finish. He dispatched No. 8 Garry Joint of Fesno State 8-1 in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation finals, he squared up with WVU's No. 4 Matt Schmitt. Schmitt gave Gomez everything he could handle, sending the match to sudden victory, but Gomez's attack pushed him past Schmitt, 5-3.
In the consolation semifinals, No. 2 Ian Parker shutout WVU's Caleb Rea, 9-0. In the third-place bout, UNI's No. 3 Josh Alber got the better of Parker, 2-0. Parker finished fourth individually for the championship.
After suffering a loss in the consolation semifinals to No. 2 Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley, No. 4 Marcus Coleman bounced back to finish fifth. He avenged his quarterfinal loss to No. 5 Hayden Hastings, defeating the Wyoming 174-pounder by 11-10 decision on riding time.
No. 3 Gannon Gremmel finished fifth at 285 pounds. He fell to Wyoming's No. 5 Brian Andrews by fall in the consolation semifinals, but came back to defeat WVU's No. 7 Brandon Ngati by 2-0 decision behind 1:53 of riding time.
Unseeded Logan Schumacher wrestled his way to the podium in Tulsa. The freshman dropped two matches in Sunday's first session to UNI's No. 3 Bryce Steiert and OSU's No. 7 Joe Smith. He finished sixth at the Big 12 Championship.
The Big 12 Championship will wrap up this evening with the finals. Iowa State's Jarrett Degen, Chase Straw, Sam Colbray and Willie Miklus will all be wrestling for Big 12 titles. The finals will be broadcast on Fox Sports affiliate networks and Fox Sports Go.
