AMES, Iowa – The 2019 cross country season is on the horizon, and the preseason polls have been released. The Iowa State men's cross country team is a consensus top-5 pick nationally among the USTFCCCA, FloTrack and Stride Report, checking in at No. 5 in all three polls.
After winning the NCAA Midwest Regional the past two seasons, the Cardinal and Gold also begin the season slated at No. 1 in the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional poll.
ISU returns an experienced team in 2019. Iowa State's 2018-19 Gary Thompson Male Athlete of the Year, Edwin Kurgat, will lead the Cyclones this season, following a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships and individual titles at the Big 12 Championships and Midwest Regional Championships last season. Iowa State also returns Thomas Pollard, Milo Greder and Chad Johnson among others.
There were also several offseason additions to the Iowa State lineup, including two-time All-American Addison Dehaven of Boise State, All-ACC performer Mitchell Day of Wake Forest and Florida A&M transfer, David Too, who was the 2017 MEAC Individual cross country champion.
The Cyclones are back-to-back defending champions at the Big 12 Championships. After regular season races at the John McNichols Invitational (Sept. 21) and Nuttycombe Invitational (Oct. 18), ISU will look to defend its title at the Big 12 Championships on Nov. 2, which are set to be held in Waco, Texas.
Iowa State will also look to build on back-to-back Midwest Regional crowns and will be going for a third straight this season in Stillwater, Okla., on Nov. 15. At the NCAA Championships, the Cyclones have finished seventh the past two seasons and will look to take the next step forward when the NCAA Finals return to Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23.
