AMES, Iowa – Deonte Burton scored 27 points to aid Iowa State (10-4, 2-1 Big 12) to a 79-70 victory over Texas (7-8, 1-2 Big 12) Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Burton, who fell two points shy of his career high in points, was 12-of-17 from the floor en route to his seventh 20-point game of his career.
Monte' Morris added 22 points in the victory and tied his career high in rebounds with 10 to register the eighth double-double of his career.
Texas shot 52.9 percent from the field, but the Cyclones were able to force 19 Longhorn turnovers on a season-high 12 steals.
How it Happened
Iowa State went into the break with a 40-31 lead. The first half was tight early on with nine lead changes. The Cyclones took control on a 10-3 run to close out the half. Burton capped the run with a trey at the buzzer.
The Cyclones shot 43 percent compared to UT's 50 percent clip in the opening period, but ISU was able to take command by forcing 12 first-half UT turnovers while committing just two.
ISU's first turnover of the game came with 1:42 left in the first half on an illegal screen.
ISU increased its lead to 14 points at 49-35 with Morris and Burton combining for ISU's first nine points of the second stanza. UT then scored eight-straight points to close the gap to six points (49-43) with 13:36 left in the game.
Burton then took over during a key stretch, scoring seven-straight points behind a trey and a monster dunk to give the Cyclones a 58-45 lead with 9:35 remaining.
UT bounced right back with a 13-4 run on a trio of 3-pointers to make it 62-58 ISU with less than six minutes remaining. Naz Mitrou-Long and Morris then hit treys on back-to-back to possessions to push the Cyclone lead to 68-60.
The Longhorns then got a 3-pointer from Andrew Jones and a basket down low from Jarrett Allen and the Cyclone lead was now down to 68-65 with 3:42 remaining.
ISU then countered with a Burton lay-up and a Matt Thomas 3-pointer from the corner off a nice feed from Burton to put the Cyclones back up 73-65 at the 1:24 mark.
Players of Note
Monte" Morris posted his eighth career double-double with 22 points and 10 boards in the win. It was Morris' 14th 20-point game of his career. He also handed out six assists with zero turnovers. He has just two turnovers in his last 178 minutes of game action.
Deonte Burton fell two points shy of his career high in points with 27 tonight. Burton had a bunch of stretches where he carried the Cyclones. He scored seven-straight points midway through the second half to help halt a Longhorn rally. It was the seventh 20-point game of his career.
Naz Mitrou-Long scored 11 points behind 3-of-8 shooting from long range. His three treys gives him 199 in his career, surpassing Scott Christopherson to No. 2 on ISU's all-time 3-pointers made list with 199.
