AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (11-7, 2-5 Big 12) used a 23-5 second-half run to knock off No. 8 Texas Tech (15-4, 4-3 Big 12) 70-52 Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones shot 47.4 from the field and held the Red Raiders to just 33.9 percent en route to their 20th victory over a top-25 team in Hilton Coliseum in the last seven seasons (20-7).
It was the largest margin of victory for the Cyclones over an AP top-10 opponent in school history.
Cameron Lard was one of five Cyclones in double figure scoring, tallying 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Lard also swatted three shots to move to No. 3 on ISU's freshman blocked shot list (35).
Nick Weiler-Babb added 13 points and five assists and Zoran Talley Jr. was big for the Cyclones with 11 points and six boards from off the bench, tying his career high in points.
How It Happened
Iowa State led throughout most of the first half and took a 33-25 lead at the break. A quick 10-2 spurt gave the Cyclones their largest lead of the opening period at 31-18 with less than five minutes remaining. Donovan Jackson hit a pair of 3-pointers in the run.
Tech closed the half on a 7-2 run to trim the Cyclone lead to eight points.
Lard had 14 points in the first half to pace the Cyclones.
TTU raced out of intermission on a 10-1 run to quickly take its first lead since the early minutes of the game at 35-34. ISU recovered from its slow start, however, mounting an 11-1 run to move ahead 45-36 with just under 12 minutes left in the contest. Lard and Jackson each had a pair of buckets in the spurt.
Talley then posted a pair of hoops, including a trey from the corner, and Weiler-Babb buried a long trey as the shot clock was winding down, and the Cyclones suddenly had a 17-point cushion (57-40) with under eight minutes remaining.
Players of Note
Cameron Lard posted his 11th double-digit scoring game of the season with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Lard is 28-of-41 (68.3%) from the field in his last four games. He also blocked three shots to give him 35 on the season, the third-best freshman total in school history.
Zoran Talley Jr. gave the Cyclones outstanding production from off the bench, posting 11 points and six rebounds. His 11 points tied a career high and he made his first 3-pointer of the season in a crucial second-half spurt for the Cyclones.
