AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Tony Minatta announced on Monday that former Cyclone goalkeeper Andrea Swanson has joined his staff as volunteer assistant coach. Swanson, who played for Iowa State 2011-12 and 2014, has spent time coaching with the Iowa Rush, Valley High School and John Brown University.
"Andrea has a great perspective from her time as a student athlete and has gained valuable experience after graduating," Minatta said. "She will provide our athletes with a great resource both on and off the field. We are grateful that she is willing to commit her time to helping the growth and development of our team. Although we will miss Whitney Sharpe and what she brought the program, we couldn't be more excited to be able to have Andrea Swanson back with the Cyclones. "
After graduating from Iowa State in 2014, Swanson has continually pursued a coaching career. The native of Clive, Iowa, served as the Iowa Rush goalkeeper's coach for the 2012 season, and then transitioned to the prep level. Swanson spent the 2012-15 seasons as the volunteer goalkeeper's coach at Valley High School in West Des Moines.
Prior to joining Minatta's staff in Ames, Swanson had most recently served as the volunteer goalkeeper coach at John Brown University. She helped JBU to a third-consecutive conference title, during a season in which the squad ascended to as high as No. 14 nationally in NAIA. While at John Brown University, Swanson coached a four-time first team all-conference GK who went on to play professionally in Sweden.
While at Iowa State, Swanson made 31 starts between the posts, including seven shutouts. She started all 18 games of her senior season, recording 83 total saves, including a career-high 13 saves. vs. Kansas. Swanson was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection (2012, 2014) and also a three-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
The Iowa State soccer program is set to begin its spring schedule vs. Nebraska on Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will be played in Lincoln, Neb.
