GAINESVILLE, Florida – A clutch final jump gave Jhoanmy Luque the No. 1 triple jump in the NCAA this season on Saturday at the Florida Relays. Luque's final jump of 44-9 1/2 (13.65m) gave her the win over Florida's Yanis David and catapulted her among the nation's best once again.
Luque was comfortably in second behind David after two rounds, but had three-straight fouls and was unable to make up any ground. The Venezuelan has had many clutch jumps in her decorated career and added another one today, as her 44-9 1/2 knocked off David, the NCAA runner-up indoors on her home track and put Luque's name atop the national leaderboard.
Also in the field, Jalen Ford tied his career-best and set a new outdoor PR with a best clearance of 7-1 (2.16m) to take fourth in the men's high jump invitational. He now ranks T-7 in ISU outdoor men's high jump history. In the women's shot put, Essence Henderson is also No. 7 in Cyclone history as her best throw of 49-9 1/4 (15.17m) got her third place today.
On the track, Iowa State's season debut in the men's 4x400 saw the team of Eric Fogltanz, Jaymes Dennison, Ka'ven Berry and Frank Hayes finish fifth in 3:10.30.
