NORMAN, Okla. – Iowa State (18-23, 1-7 Big 12) was unable to upset No. 2 Oklahoma (33-2, 8-0 Big 12) during a doubleheader on Sunday at Marita Hynes Field. The Sooners took game one 8-1, and an ISU rally in game two fell short, as OU came away with a 9-5 victory.
The five runs Iowa State scored in game two were most allowed by the Sooners this season.
Oklahoma 8, Iowa State 1
A seven-run third inning for the Sooners proved to be Iowa State's undoing in the first game of the day. Following 2.5 scoreless innings, Oklahoma tallied three hits and capitalized on four ISU errors in the bottom of the third, hanging seven runs on the board to take command.
The Sooners started the scoring with a three-run home run by Jocelyn Alo, followed by a solo shot from Nicole Pendley. OU then got an RBI triple by Nicole Mendes before a wild pitch and a pair of ISU errors allowed three more runs to score, giving Oklahoma a 7-0 advantage.
Senior Nychole Antillon brought some life to the Cyclone dugout with a two-out solo home run in the top of the fourth inning. Antillon's moon shot to left field put Iowa State on the board, and was the first run allowed by OU ace Paige Parker in her last 41 innings of action.
The Sooners tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the fifth on ground ball that allowed Eliyah Flores to race home from third, giving OU an 8-1 lead.
Emma Hylen pitched all 6.0 innings for the Cyclones, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. The Iowa State offense tallied four hits against OU's Parker, led by Antillon's solo shot, but were unable to get any more run support.
Oklahoma 9, Iowa State 5
The Cyclones found their footing right off the bat in the second game of the day, putting a run on the board in the top of the first inning to take their first lead of the day. Sami Williams ripped a lead-off double to left-center field to open the game, and Antillon later stayed hot at the plate with an RBI single to left field. It was the first time Oklahoma has allowed a first-inning run this season.
Kelsey Arnold notched a two-RBI double as the Sooners answered back in the bottom of the second, and OU added another on an ISU error to take a 3-1 lead after two innings.
Oklahoma scratched out a run in the bottom of the third on a Mendes RBI base hit, and then exploded for three more in the fourth. Pendley logged a two-RBI base hit to left, and would later score an unearned run on an Iowa State error, extending the OU lead to 7-1.
Iowa State battled back and swung momentum back in its favor in the top of the fifth. Kaylee Bosworth and Logan Schaben sparked ISU with back-to-back base hits to lead off the inning, followed by a walk for Skyler Ramos, loading the bases. Kaila Konz then stepped up and placed an RBI single through the right side, scoring Bosworth.
The Sooners then made a pitching change, as senior Paige Lowary took the circle to face Williams with the bases loaded. Oklahoma put on a shift, bringing its left fielder into the infield to overload the right side, looking to cut the field in half with the hard-throwing Lowary pitching. Williams took advantage of the shift and turned on a pitch, ripping a base hit through the left side. With nobody manning left field for the Sooners, Williams turned it into a double and all three runners scored, cutting OU's lead to 7-5.
The Cyclones loaded the bases once again in the sixth, as Bosworth and Schaben again notched base hits to start the inning. The Sooners then intentionally walked Williams to load the bags, but ISU was unable to take advantage. OU tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the inning, and the Cyclones were unable to respond.
Williams, Bosworth and Schaben all went 2-of-3 at the plate in game two, including a pair of doubles and three RBIs for Williams.
