AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Athletics Department concluded the 2017-2018 academic year by recording a 988 in the NCAA's Academic Performance Rate (APR) metric.
That score, which is a composite score of all the sports sponsored by Iowa State University, is the best score ever achieved in school history.
The APR calculation, a team-based academic metric created by the NCAA, is a measurement of the academic eligibility and retention of student-athletes. The NCAA created it as its primary academic measure for student-athlete performance toward graduation.
The NCAA also uses each institution's overall APR score to annually distribute a portion of the millions of dollars of revenue generated by the NCAA Basketball Championship.
Iowa State University's score of 988 means the Cyclone student-athletes earned 98.8% of all available eligibility and retention points.
"It's a great tribute to the hard work of our student-athletes, as well as our coaches and support staff, who are all committed to seeing our Cyclones graduate," Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. "Getting this news is a great way to end the academic year and we'll proudly tout this accomplishment, and many others, as we begin our state-wide Tailgate Tour next week."
The NCAA will officially announce top-performing teams (upper 10% nationally) on May 16 as well as each institution's overall APR scores on May 23.
