AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore Sami Williams has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Softball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Williams, a native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., was selected to the third team.
Williams maintained a 4.0 GPA in Software Engineering, and was also an Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree. She is the first Cyclone softball player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American since 2001 (Kristin Ferguson), and the sixth all-time in program history. Williams is one of three Big 12 student-athletes to earn the honor this year, joining Oklahoma State's Vanessa Shippy and Oklahoma's Paige Parker.
On the field, Williams had a phenomenal sophomore campaign, leading the Cyclones with a .388 batting average, 14 doubles, 12 home runs and 27 RBIs. Williams' 12 home runs are the third-most ever in a single season in program history, leading the way as the 2018 Cyclones broke the single season school record with 44 dingers on year.
Williams was among the 19 out of 33 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-Americans to maintain a 4.00 GPA (or better) as either undergraduate or graduate students.
