COTTBUS, Germany – Andrea Maldonado made history during her floor routine at the FIG Apparatus World Cup by becoming the first woman to successfully complete the front handspring layout triple twist in international competition. The move will be known as 'The Maldonado' in the FIG Woman's Code of Points.
"This was the best experience of my gymnastics career," Maldonado exclaimed. "Having a move named after me is a dream come true. I am very happy I was able to do it, and make my family and everyone that supported me proud."
Maldonado finished the floor competition in 13th out of 33 competitors with a score of 12.733. Her routine included 'The Maldonado', which shocked the international gymnastics community.
"Our Cyclone family wants to congratulate Andrea and her club coach and father, Dago Maldonado, for training this skill for many years so it could be performed to mark their legacy in the sport," assistant coach Nilson Medeiros said. "Our gymnastics program is very lucky to play a part of this great accomplishment."
Now that the move is hers, Maldonado is ready to turn her focus to the 2020 NCAA gymnastics season.
"Now I want to focus on my NCAA career and help the Cyclones have their best season ever," Maldonado stated.
The Cyclones kick off the 2020 campaign with a trip to Arizona on Jan. 11. Iowa State opens the home portion of the year on Jan. 17 against West Virginia, which will likely be Cyclone Nation's first chance to see 'The Maldonado' live in competition.
