Iowa State Head Coach Dan McCarney
"It was a tremendous victory for us today. We made all kinds of mistakes but got the best kind of gut check for a young football team. These kids played with a lot of heart. We had some breakdowns at times, many mistakes, but the most important statistic in the end is winning or losing."
"This wasn't a great day for us defensively. We know we will have to play a lot better in the Big 12 conference and for Oklahoma State. We did things we weren't able to do last game and we'll keep building on it. We made a lot of progress with this football team today."
Iowa State Right End, Tyson Smith
"Early in the game, after the interception, we kind of let them get back into the game and we were really beating ourselves out there."
"It's a real confidence booster and everyone plays just a little better when you have a momentum on your side."
"We needed this win real bad, it's a week by week thing and we just have to learn from our mistake today and come out and play hard next game."
Iowa State Quarterback, Brett Meyer
"We'd like to be 3-0, but 2-1 sounds a lot better than 1-2."
"They definitely got some momentum going, but our defense definitely stepped up. Ellis Hobbs' blocked punt could have been the play of the game right there."
"All around, we just kept battling back. Last year we would have had trouble with a game like this, but you can see the changes over the past year."
Iowa State Right End, Shawn Moorehead
"The turnovers were huge for defense, it really got the momentum going our way, especially when we scored off them."
"We made some mistakes, but it was a gut check and we got the win and that's the most important thing."
Northern Illinois Head Coach Joe Novak:
"Phil played very poor at the beginning and very poor at the end but he played great in the middle. He's young and this was only his third game, but he did some very positive things for us today, more positive things then he's done all year."
"It's not a talent thing. I think we're good enough to compete with whoever we play, but what happened today was typical...two penalties and a blocked punt."
On Flynn and Meyer:
"Both quarterbacks are good, they're both young and erratic throwers. I thought Flynn was good last year and Meyer is a good prospect, but I thought Austin's experience helped him out in this one. He played good at the end."
"We had our chances and didn't get it done. Our next game is more important to us than this one was and I know their next game is more important to them than this one as well."
Northern Illinois Tailback A.J. Harris:
"It felt like we let this one get away. We need to keep this stuck in our heads to keep us motivated. I think we played really well, but in the end they just outplayed us."
Northern Illinois Linebacker Brian Atkinson:
(on Iowa State comeback)
"That's the way of the game. We've done:
it to other teams and we need to just keep playing until it says zero on the scoreboard."
