SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Iowa State (6-3) was unable to take advantage of 16 team blocks as they fell to Missouri State, 3-1 (30-28, 31-33, 20-30, 24-30), in action at the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic.
The Cyclones dominated at the net on their way to a 30-28 first game win. ISU had eight blocks to Missouri State's two and Katie Churm was solid defensively, notching nine digs in the game.
The Bears out hit the Cyclones, .143 to .128, but were unable to capitalize because of strong defensive play by ISU.
Game two saw the Cyclones jump out to a 10-6 lead only to have Missouri State take the lead back with a 5-0 run of their own. The Bears extended the lead to 28-23 before the Cyclones rallied to tie it at 29-29 after a kill by Nicole Lorenzen. A service ace by Missouri State's Adeana McAfee gave the Bears a 33-31 win and tied the match at 1-1.
Lorenzen had six kills in the second game to lead ISU.
Missouri State controlled the third game from the start but ISU staged a rally, closing the gap to 23-20. The Bears hit .211 in the game and controlled the net, picking up five blocks in the game.
Missouri State hit .354 in the fourth game to down the Cyclones, 30-24, and take the match.
Lorenzen led ISU with 12 kills and 11 digs in the match. Churm had 19 digs and Amanda Craig led the offensive attack with 41 assists in the loss.
Sabrina Apker had 13 kills to lead five Bears in double figures. Ashley Warren posted a double-double with 57 assists and 17 digs in the match.
The Cyclones will face Arkansas at 5 p.m. in their final match of the tournament.
