AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head men's basketball coach Greg McDermott will be inducted into the Wayne State Athletics Hall of Fame, Oct. 7, in Wayne, Neb.
McDermott received his first head coaching position at the Division II school in 1994. The Wildcats had fallen on hard times before McDermott's arrival, finishing 7-20 in 1993 and 1994. He quickly established a competitive team in his first two seasons and then led WSC to a 21-7 mark in 1996-97. It was the first of four-straight 20-win seasons for McDermott, who built the Wildcats into a Division II power.
His final two seasons at WSC were among the best in school history. The 1998-99 squad finished 23-5 and advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time in school history. His final team (1999-00) went 26-6 and appeared in the "Sweet Sixteen" of the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Wildcats tied for first in their first season in the Northern Sun Conference, helping McDermott earn Northern Sun Coach of the Year honors. He finished his six-year tenure at WSC with an overall 116-53 mark.
McDermott enters his first season with the Cyclones after reversing the fortunes at his alma mater, the University of Northern Iowa. McDermott took over a UNI team that was 7-24 in 2000 and left in 2006 with three consecutive 20-win seasons and three-straight NCAA Tournament berths.
The McDermott era at Iowa State will officially begin on Nov. 3, with an exhibition against EA Sports in Hilton Coliseum.
