Cyclones Dominate Holiday Preview

AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State track and field team kicked off its season with a bang, coming out of the annual Holiday Preview with 10 first-place finishes and 22 top-three efforts.
Junior Monique Hawkins captured first place in the 300-meter run with a time of 40.43 while newcomer Kianna Elahi broke the Holiday Preview record in the 400-meter dash, clocking a 57.51.

“It feels good [breaking the Holiday Preview record],” Elahi said. “I wasn't really expecting to do anything spectacular but I just went out there and started fast.”
Junior Jenna Caffrey was top-three in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 60-meter dash. Caffrey placed first in the 60-meter hurdles and third in the 60-meter dash with times of 8.79 and 7.79, respectively.
“Jenna is getting back to the point that she wants to get to,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “I think she's just going to keep getting better and better.”
Britta Christofferson dominated the women's shot put, earning first place with a toss of 48-11 and Marshalltown native Amy Waggoner placed second in the women's weight throw, launching a 17-65 throw. Thrower Zac Brouilette placed first in the weight throw, tossing a 62-10. Following Brouilette in second place was Robbie Utterback who threw the 35-pound bag 53-1? . Brouilette also placed second in the shot put, throwing a shot 53-09?. Sophomore Luke Pinkelman won the shot put with a toss of 56-02.
"That (throwers) group has gone above and beyond of what they need to get to the next level," Ihmels said. "Obviously Zac and Britta did a great job today but there is a plethora of throwers behind them. Zac's been huge. He's taking his throwing to the next level, it's going to be exciting to see where he can take it."
Cyclone James Galvan took first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.73. Galvan holds the school record in the event, clocking a 1:48.11 last season. Last year's 800-meter run Holiday Preview champion David Lantz took first place in the men's mile run with a time of 4:21.91 followed by teammate Richard Newton, who clocked 4:22.27, placing second.
"They are just coming off fall cross-country so I think that helped," Ihmels said. "Obviously David Lantz ran pretty well since he has usually been a middle distance guy. Both did a good job and competed really hard today."
Senior Eric Parker won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.07.
The Cyclone women's 4x300-meter relay consisting of Monique Hawkins, Lashawn Wright, Leia Jackson and Jenna Caffrey took first with a time of 2:46.34.
The next event hosted by the Cyclones will be the ISU Open and will take place January 23-24 at the Lied Recreation Center.
