COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Iowa State tennis team exited in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships after losing to the fifth-seeded Kansas Jayhawks, 4-0. The Cyclones finish the season with a mark of 4-15 and were the 12th seed in the Big 12 tournament. Kansas moves on to face fourth-seeded Colorado.
Kansas took the lead in the match early, after winning the doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, Kunigunda Dorn and Lauren Hommell defeated Iowa State's Kara Hickey and Caitlin Loprinzi, 8-4. At the No. 3 doubles position, Yuliana Svistun and Magdalena Tokarczyk were victorious over Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer, 8-3.
In singles play, Kansas' Edina Horvath upended Loprinzi, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. In No. 4 singles, Dorn defeated Palen, 6-0, 6-0 and at the No. 5 singles spot, Svistun defeated Wischer, 6-0, 6-1.
Erin Karonis was leading Magdalena Tokarczyk, 6-3, 5-5, at the No. 1 singles slot, but their match was called once Kansas was determined to be the winner.
"It (being down in a match) has been just a very repetitive thing," said ISU assistant coach Armando Espinosa. "We've been in situations like this before and we have not been able to learn how to capitalize. We are trying to get better at that. We were up in three of the single matches. Unfortunately, it was down to four and we lost the four before we could get the momentum back. If we would have won some matches faster, it could have changed the outcome of the match."
This marks the second time this week that the Cyclones have lost to the Jayhawks. Kansas defeated Iowa State in the regular-season finale on Sunday.
