IRVING, Texas ? Iowa State sophomore Erin Karonis, was named Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The Ivyland, Pa., native picked up two victories at the No. 1 singles slot in Big 12 Conference play last weekend. On Friday she earned a victory over Colorado's Melisa Esposito, 7-5, 6-2, and on Sunday she recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win over Missouri's Jessica Giuggioli.
“It's a great and rewarding feeling and a great way to end the season,” Karonis said. “This makes me even more excited to compete with my team at the Big 12 Championships.”
ISU's Karonis finished the regular season with a 15-5 overall mark and a 7-4 record in Big 12 singles play.
“I am very proud that her consistent efforts have paid off and have been recognized,” Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We are so lucky to have her as a part of the team.”
Karonis and the Cyclones will open Big 12 Championship play against Oklahoma State Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Norman, Okla.
