AMES, Iowa ? Chassidy Cole, a 5-8 guard from Amarillo, Texas, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Iowa State in 2009-10, Bill Fennelly announced Friday. Cole will be a sophomore for the Cyclones next season after spending one year at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas.
"We are lucky to get such a quality person and player like Chassidy during the late signing period," Fennelly said. “The added bonus for us is that she was a qualifier out of high school and she will have three years as a Cyclone. I appreciate the coaches at Howard allowing us to recruit Chassidy. She will give us depth at all our perimeter positions while helping to even out our classes.”
Cole led Howard to a 26-9 record in 2008-09 and a top-four finish in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, averaging eight points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals per game as a freshman. Howard was the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 5 champion and qualified for the national tournament. Cole led her region in assist-to-turnover ratio and ranked sixth in steals per game. She knocked down 33 three-pointers at a 32.4 percent clip, which ranked 14th regionally. Cole passed out five or more assists in seven contests and nabbed three or more steals 13 times.
As a senior at Amarillo High School, Cole propelled her prep squad to a 31-6 mark in 2007-08. She was named to the all-district first team twice and was a Texas Basketball Coaches' Association second-team all-region pick as a senior. She averaged 9.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 3.1 assists per game in her final prep season. She earned all-tournament accolades at several tournaments, including the Fantasy of Lights Tournament, The Mansfield Invitational Tournament and the Polk-Key City Tournament. She was named a preseason super team pick as a senior.
Cole played for head coach Earl Diddle at Howard College and for Jeff Williams at Amarillo High School.
