AMES, Iowa ? The 2009 Iowa State volleyball schedule will feature 10 matches against NCAA Tournament qualifiers, as well as rematches against Northern Iowa and Minnesota, who the Cyclones beat in postseason tournament play last fall.
“This will be another competitive schedule for us,” ISU head coach Christy Johnson said. “We are excited about the rematches with UW-Milwaukee and Northern Iowa, both of which beat us in the preseason last year. And of course the Cy-Hawk series matchup against Iowa means we'll play several important matches in just the first few weeks of the season.”

The Cyclones, who finished 22-13 last year and advanced to the Elite Eight, return six starters from last year's squad, including All-Americans Victoria Henson, Kaylee Manns and Ashley Mass.
Fans will be able to get the first glimpse of the 2009 Cyclones Saturday, Aug. 22 at the annual Cardinal & Gold Scrimmage at Hilton Coliseum.
A week later ISU will open the regular season in search of its fourth-straight NCAA Championship appearance when it plays host to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a rare Friday-Saturday series. The Cyclones and Panthers will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 before meeting for a second meeting the following day at 3 p.m.
Iowa State then takes to the road to face intrastate rival Northern Iowa Wednesday, Sept. 2 at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls. The Cyclones have won four of the last five meetings between the schools.
The Cyclones head to Minnesota on Labor Day Weekend for matches against the Golden Gophers, George Washington and Auburn. ISU opens the tournament against the GW before facing Auburn in Saturday's opening match. The Cyclones will conclude tournament play against the host Gophers, who ISU beat last year at the Sports Pavilion to advance to its second-straight Sweet 16.
“We are looking forward to traveling back to Minnesota,” Johnson said. “They have a great atmosphere and it is the hometown of senior Diane Kieger, so it gives her a chance to compete in front of friends and family. Minnesota could be a top-10 team next year, so I expect this match to tell us a lot about our own team and what our potential is for the season.”
The Hawkeye Challenge, Sept. 11-12 in Iowa City, will feature matches against Northern Colorado, Drake and Iowa. The Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series contest between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes will take place Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Cyclones open Big 12 play Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Hilton Coliseum against Colorado. Iowa State's first conference road match will be Friday, Sept. 18 at Texas, which is expected to be ranked among the nation's top-10 when the preseason polls are announced in August. The Longhorns defeated the Cyclones, 3-1, in the Elite Eight last season.
The 20-match Big 12 schedule is highlighted by back-to-back home contests against the Longhorns and Nebraska on Wednesday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 7. The conference schedule features home-and-home with each of the other 10 Big 12 schools that sponsor volleyball.
For the fifth-straight season, ISU will close regular season play at home, this time hosting Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 28.
The Cyclones' byes will come Saturday, Oct. 17 and Wednesday, Nov. 25.
Start times for all home matches, except the Aug. 29 match against UW-Milwaukee (3 p.m.) are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Times are subject to change.
The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be held from Dec. 3-6 at selected host sites. The regionals are slated for Dec. 11-12 at one of four sites: Stephen C. O'Connell Center (University of Florida), Sports Pavilion (University of Minnesota), Qwest Center (Omaha, Neb.) and Maples Pavilion (Stanford University) . The 2009 NCAA Final Four will be held in Tampa, Fla., Dec. 17-19.

“I am very excited about the atmosphere we are creating at Hilton Coliseum,” Johnson said. “Finishing 14th in the country in attendance was very important to our program and our goal is to continue building on that.
“This season we are really pushing to set a record for season-ticket holders,” added Johnson. “We hope that our competitive schedule, the fact that we return almost everyone from an Elite Eight team and the extra incentives we have added for our season-ticket holders, such as Meet and Greets with the Cyclones and reserved seating, will help us reach our goals of becoming one of the most supported volleyball programs in the country.”
