AMES, Iowa - After an outstanding double-dual meet last weekend in which the Iowa State Cyclones defeated South Dakota State and Western Illinois in every event, the Cyclones are preparing to take on the University of Northern Iowa Panthers Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Beyer Pool.
"(The team) accomplished their goal of swimming fast on a Friday then turning around again Saturday and doing the same," Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. "There were a few best times and personal bests, and we were pleased with the effort of the team."
Dani Harris ended the meet with three wins, including leading off the 400 medley relay and in the 200 IM in which she finished with a 2:09.90. Harris's final win of the day was in the 100 back in which she touched with a 58.13.
The Cyclones finished the weekend with many great victories including Freshman Alex Gustafson who finished strong in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.09. Teammate Sarah Norris also won the 50 free at 24.84.
The Panthers will provide great competition this weekend for the Cyclones.
"Northern Iowa always has very strong individuals that match up very well," Sorenson said. "They are always ready to race another in-state school.
Northern Iowa defeated the South Dakota Coyotes this past Friday and finished with six first place wins. Senior Josie Itzen had two first- place finishes in the night. Itzen finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.31. Teammate Kelly McCullough also had a top spot finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:32.71
The Panthers freshman Bethany Olson was named the Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week during the week of October 27th. Olson placed first in the 3-meter with 232.65 points against South Dakota.
"The divers are prepared and we had a good last competition, and with a break from competing we have had more time to prepare," diving coach Jeff Warrick said.
Cyclone Sarah Nelson won the 1-meter with a score of 254.65 as well as in the 3-meter, with a career best score of 276.05.
