Cyclones.com talked to fifth-year Iowa State head softball coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler and over the course of five days we'll be breaking down the upcoming season.
AMES, Iowa ? In today's edition of “Talking Softball with Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler”, Cyclones.com will talk about the options in the infield for the fifth-year head coach.
A vastly underrated aspect for any coach is the ability to put a group of players in the field that have played together for multiple years, and that is just what Gemeinhardt-Cesler has at her disposal.
At first base, Sydni Jones returns for her senior year at Iowa State. A reliable defensive player, Jones gives ISU a big bat in the lineup, having hit 15 career homers.
Amanda Bradberry will again see action at second base despite offseason hamstring surgery, Bradberry, a career .271 hitter, missed the entire fall season with the injury, but is available for this weekend's opening tournament.
Carrie Monroe has been the Cyclones' starter at shortstop the last two seasons and will see time there again this spring. Monroe's batting average improved by nearly 50 points to .235 in her sophomore campaign.
At third base, Courtney Wray started for Iowa State last spring until being hit by a pitch against Missouri and missing the rest of the season with a broken wrist. The senior has been the most consistent hitter for the Cyclones and was batting .301 prior to the season-ending injury.
Other options in the infield include freshmen Amandine Habben, Erica Miller and Tori Torrescano. Sophomore Dalyn Varela, who hit .170 her rookie season, should see time at second or third base for the Cyclones.
