AMES, Iowa - When No. 25 Iowa State needed her most Kelsey Bolte overcame a cold shooting night to make the biggest shot of the game. Bolte's trey with 2:16 left in overtime gave the Cyclones a 63-54 lead that Texas could not vanquish as Iowa State scored a 66-57 win over the Longhorns. Iowa State is now 19-8 overall and 7-6 in the Big 12, in sole possession of fifth place in the league standings. Texas falls to 17-10 overall and 6-7 in Big 12 play. Iowa State plays at Kansas State Saturday in a game that will tip off at 7 p.m. CST.
Iowa State was quick out of the gate at the start of the overtime period and three inside baskets, two by Anna Prins and one by Chelsea Poppens gave the Cyclones a 60-54 lead with 3:25 left. A pair of missed Texas' three-point attempts preceded Bolte's big trey and Iowa State went on to claim a huge win with postseason implications.
Poppens scored a career-high 23 points with a game-high 13 rebounds and Prins added 13 as the Cyclones outscored Texas 34-18 in the paint. A 44-37 rebounding advantage helped Iowa State overcome 10 Texas three-point makes to claim its third Big 12 win in four games. Kathleen Nash led Texas with 15 points.
It was a back-and-forth contest in which the lead changed hands 11 times and the score was tied 11 times. Iowa State had a chance to win in regulation, but Bolte's free-throw line fader bounced off the rim forcing overtime.
With the score tied 38-38 in the second half, Texas struck with threes from Yvonne Anderson and Tiffany Moore to pull ahead 44-38 with 10:37 left in the game. That would be the high watermark for the Longhorns as Iowa State fought back to take the lead 52-49 with 2:44 left in regulation.
The contest marked Iowa State's 511th straight game with a three-point field goal, an NCAA record. The Cyclones hit just 5-of-21 shots from three-point range but the biggest one fell for Iowa State in overtime, which garnered the Cyclones their 300th win all-time at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State's 94 home court wins in Big 12 history is a conference high dating back to the league's inception in 1997. Iowa State is 17-0 after leading at halftime.
