AMES, Iowa - The Cyclones have finalized their 2011 schedule, head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch announced Friday. The schedule will pit Iowa State against eight teams from the 2010 NCAA tournament, including six teams who finished the season ranked in the top 25.
The Cyclones, who finished 20-9 last year and finished the year ranked 25th in the nation, will start the season with a trip to Northern Illinois where they will play Cincinnati, one of last season's NCAA tournament teams, in the season opener on Aug. 26. IUPUI and the hosting Huskies will play the Cyclones on Aug. 27.
The home season opens Sept. 2-3 when the Cyclones host the Iowa State Challenge. Iowa State and Southern Mississippi will meet for the first time in the programs' history before the Cyclones face Arizona State the same day. On the final day of the tournament, the Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes will face each other in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
After the tournament, the Cyclones hit the road to play Florida, North Dakota State (twice), Northern Iowa and former Big 12 rival Nebraska over a 12 day stretch. All four opponents played in the NCAA tournament last season, with Nebraska and Florida advancing to the Elite Eight and each team finishing the season ranked seventh and eighth, respectively.
Big 12 season gets underway on Sept. 21 against the Missouri Tigers who defeated UNI in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2010 en route to an Elite Eight birth. The Tigers fell to Iowa State in Columbia, Mo. last year before winning the series finale in Ames.
Trips to Texas Tech and Kansas close out the first full month of the season before Texas comes to Ames on Oct. 1. The Longhorns are the Cyclones' only opponent that reached the Final Four in 2010. Texas finished the season ranked fourth in the country.
Iowa State heads to Manhattan, Kan. to play Kansas State on Oct. 5 and returns home to play Oklahoma and Baylor before traveling to College Station, Texas on Oct. 22 to finish the first round of conference play against Texas A&M.
The Jayhawks come to Hilton to start round two of league competition on Oct. 26 before the Cyclones take to the road, heading to Texas and Oklahoma. Home games against the Red Raiders and Wildcats are split with a trip to Missouri and Iowa State will make a final trip south, to Baylor, before hosting the season finale at Hilton on Nov. 26 against the Aggies.
NCAA postseason begins with the first and second rounds scheduled for Dec. 1-4. Regional championships will follow Dec. 8-11 with the Championship rounds played Dec. 15-17 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
All match times have been set with the exceptions of the Cyclones' match at Nebraska and at home against Texas and Texas Tech, which will be determined after football kickoff times are released.
