AMES, Iowa – Iowa State redshirt-sophomore Taylor Sanderson is off to a strong start in Day 1 of the heptathlon at the 2014 Bill Bergan Invitational. Sanderson had a career day, setting four personal records and is competing against athletes from Kansas State, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The Bondurant, Iowa, native is currently in 2nd place, with 2987 points.
In the 60-meter dash, it was a two-horse race between Sanderson and Wisconsin's Charlie Foss. Foss (7.145) edged out Sanderson (7.148) in a tight race that was decided at the line by just 3 one-thousandths of a second.
Sanderson took second again in the long jump behind a best mark of 22'11.25". He improved on each of his three attempts, culminating in the near-23 foot leap. Kansas State's Devin Dick won the long jump portion with a mark of 23'00".
The Bondurant, Iowa, native was impressive again in the shot put, throwing a career mark of 38'4 and placed second in the high jump at 6'04.25".
As mentioned above, Sanderson set career marks in the 60-meter dash, long jump and shot put. He trails the leader, Dick, by 114 points heading into the final three events.
Sanderson will return to competition tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CT to wrap up the men's heptathlon. Both the heptathlon and pentathlon will be competed in tomorrow's action.
