LOUISVILLE, KY. – The No. 6 Iowa State women's cross country squad put together an impressive race at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, taking second place in a strong field that included four other ranked teams.
The Cyclones did not run All-American Bethanie Brown, but were led by Perez Rotich, who started her junior campaign by placing fourth, in a time of 17:05.13. Rotich, who did not run in ISU's first three events of the year, was one of a number of Cyclones making their season debuts at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, which will host the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
Iowa State's second finisher was making not only a season debut, but her career debut as well. Freshman Beck Straw proved that she will be a crucial piece of Iowa State's season moving forward, placing 12th in a time of 17:14.10. Straw was followed closely by Erin Hooker, a sophomore also running her first event of the year. Hooker clocked a 17:15.01 to finish 13th.
Abby Caldwell, a sophomore from Waverly, Iowa, was ISU's fourth finisher, placing 20th in 17:20.46. The Cyclones' scoring effort was completed by junior Maryn Lowry, who took 30th with a time of 17:29.79.
Katherine DeSimone (72nd – 17:55.24), Evelyne Guay (80th – 17:58.93) and Kelly Naumann (96th – 18:05.91) finished out the Iowa State effort.
The Cyclones will finish up their regular season slate in two weeks at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. in Madison, Wisc.
