AMES, Iowa – Future Cyclone Thomas Pollard continues to bring in the accolades as the Cyclone signee was named the Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the state of Iowa Friday. This marks Pollard's third award from Gatorade, as he is also a two-time Athlete of the Year for the state of Iowa in cross country.
Pollard, from Gilbert, had another outstanding season on the track as he picked up a pair of individual state titles in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs en route to leading Gilbert to a second place team finish. Back in October, Pollard led Gilbert to its first-ever team cross country state championship.
He has also been a star at invitational events, earning All-America honors twice at the Foot Locker National High School Cross Country Finals, winning the 3,200-meter run at the Midwest Distance Classic earlier this month and finishing third in the 1,500 at the Nike Festival of Miles.
The 2015 Iowa State men's cross country team will now feature three previous Gatorade Athlete of the Year winners in Pollard, Dan Curts and Josh Evans. Evans, from Linn-Mar High School had won the Iowa Gatorade Athlete of the Year award in cross country and twice in track and field prior to Pollard, meaning ISU will have the last three victors for Iowa's Gatorade Athlete of the Year award for cross country and track and field.
Pollard continues his summer competition schedule Saturday at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle, competing in the boy's two mile competition.
