AMES, Iowa - Iowa State cross country runner Evelyne Guay has been named the Big 12 Runner of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Guay, a redshirt freshman, won the Hawkeye Early Bird Invitational on Friday in the first collegiate cross country meet of her career.
Guay posted a 3-kilometer time of 10:13.1 to lead the No. 1 Cyclones to victory in their season-opening meet. The Oakville, Ontario, native was the first of a quartet of Cyclone runners to cross the finish line ahead of the competition, as ISU boasted the meet's top four finishers to win in dominant fashion. Iowa State finished with 17 teams points, followed by Illinois State (62 points), Iowa (65 points) and UNI (85 points).
Running out front with ISU teammates Katerine DeSimone, Maryn Lowry and Andrea Toppin, Guay and company controlled the race throughout. She crossed the finish line 16.2 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor from an opposing school.
Guay and the Cyclones return to the course Sept. 11 at the Oz Memorial in Minneapolis, Minn.
