Schaben Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week

AMES, Iowa – For the first time since 2009, Iowa State won the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week award as Jess Schaben earned the honor. The Monday announcement by the conference makes Schaben the first Cyclone to win the honor since Victoria Henson in 2009.

This is the Defiance, Iowa native's fifth Big 12 weekly award, and first of 2016 after she was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week four times in 2015. Henson was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week four times in her Cyclone career, while Erin Boeve won a Player of the Week award in 2005, prior to the awards being split into "Offensive" and "Defensive" in 2007.

Schaben was the driving force for the Cyclones in their five set win at West Virginia. The sophomore led ISU with 26 kills, the second-highest total of her Cyclone career at a .418 hitting percentage, her highest hitting clip when attempting at least 50 swings (55 attempts).

She was also strong for the Cyclones in the backline, posting her second career double-double as she also contributed 11 digs. She also had two block assists and an ace in the victory in Morgantown.

Schaben leads Iowa State and ranks sixth in the Big 12 with her 3.73 kills per set so far this season. In Big 12 play, she has earned her 3.71 kills per set at a .270 hitting percentage.

TCU's Natalie Gower was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, while Texas' Micaya White earned her fourth Big 12 Freshman of the Week award.

The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday against No. 6 Kansas. First serve will be at 6:30 p.m. with the match being televised on the FSN networks.
