AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team made a pair of additions to its squad for the 2017 season, head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch announced Friday. Iowa State will welcome a pair of transfers in DS/OH Hannah Cherry, who was previously at Northern Arizona, and OH Josie Herbst, a Bettendorf native who spent her freshman season at UNLV last year. Both began classes at Iowa State this semester, both will be eligible to participate in spring workouts, practices and matches and each will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited about adding Josie and Hannah to our team," Johnson-Lynch said. "Both are hard-working, wonderful young women who are very dedicated to their studies and to being the best they can be on and off the court. They, along with having Piper Mauck this spring, will be wonderful additions to our team, and we are eager to get started with them."
Cherry comes to Iowa State after spending two seasons at Northern Arizona. After redshirting her first season in Flagsatff, she spent 2016 mostly as a reserve, playing in a limited role across the season until the final eight matches of the season, when she took over as libero for the Lumberjacks. Her time at libero included a career-high 29 digs at Idaho State. A St. Charles, Missouri native, Cherry was a two-time First Team All-State outside hitter at Villa Duchesne High School.
"With Hannah, we see someone that can contribute to our ball-handling," Johnson-Lynch stated. "She's an experienced player who earned time at libero at her last school. We'll train her in a few positions and see where she fits in best, but I am very excited to add her ball control to this team."
Herbst returns to Iowa after spending her freshman season at UNLV, helping the Rebels making the NCAA Volleyball Championship. She played in four matches for UNLV, recording three kills. At Bettendorf, she was a two-time First Team All-State honoree and a PrepVolleyball.com Senior Ace. Her senior season saw her recorded a school-record 385 kills at a .360 hitting percentage, 286 digs and 55 service aces.
"Josie is a smaller, very dynamic outside hitter," Johnson-Lynch noted. "She is a great competitor, and makes up for her size with how hard she plays. She will be a great compliment to the outsides we already have in the program."
A third new addition has joined the Cyclones in Spring 2017, as Piper Mauck graduated early from Des Moines Roosevelt, and began classes at ISU in January. She will also be eligible to participate in spring workouts, practices and matches. Mauck, a setter, is the No. 24 recruit in the Class of 2017 according to PrepVolleyball.com, was an AVCA/Under Armour High School All-America Honorable Mention and a Des Moines Register Elite All-State selection.
