AMES, Iowa – The No. 46 Iowa State women's golf team is headed for NCAA postseason play for the eighth-straight season. The Cyclones were selected to play in the NCAA Lubbock Regional, May 8-10 in Lubbock, Texas as the No. 13 seed.
The NCAA Lubbock Regional will be held at The Rawls Course with Texas Tech as the host. The top six teams in the four regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The three individuals in each regional not among the teams advancing will also punch a ticket to Sugar Grove.
This marks the 12th time and the eighth year in a row (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) Iowa State has qualified for an NCAA Regional. In 2014, the Cyclones advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first and only time in school history, finishing 23rd at the national tournament.
"We were a little on the edge than I would like to have been to be quite honest," Iowa State head women's golf coach Christie Martens said. "I think it's become an expectation (making NCAA Regional) and our players talk about that amongst themselves. Scheduling is also a big part of that, playing against good teams and being where we are. They definitely think about it. We are happy to be playing in the postseason."
Iowa State is coming off a runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championship in San Antonio, its best showing at the Big 12 meet in school history. ISU has finished in the upper half of the Big 12 Championship eight seasons in a row.
A pair of Cyclones are currently ranked in the nation's top-150 in sophomore Chayanit Wangmahaporn (No. 92) and junior Celia Barquin (No. 129). Both earned all-tournament honors at the Big 12 Championship last weekend.
Wangmahaporn's season scoring mark of 72.77 is on pace to break the Cyclone season record of 73.09 set by former Cyclone All-American Chonlada Chayanun in 2014-15.
Wangmahaporn has three top-10 finishes on the season and she tied the school's 54-hole scoring record with a 209 (68-71-70) at the UCF Challenge earlier this spring.
Barquin has continued to excel in her third season as a staple in the Cyclone lineup. The Puente San Miguel, Spain, native is second on the team in stroke average (73.46) and has three top-10 finishes on the season.
Barquin owns the best career stroke average in the Cyclone annals (73.54) and has 11 career top-10 finishes.
