AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's and women's basketball teams were back at Hilton Coliseum Friday night for Cyclone Basketball's annual Hilton Madness event.
Following introductions, fans were greeted with special messages from head men's coach Steve Prohm and head women's coach Bill Fennelly to start the evening.
In the shooting contest, the squads were split into four co-ed teams and squared off trying to make seven pre-assigned baskets as quickly as possible. In the end it was the team of Lindell Wigginton, Bridget Carleton, Michael Jacobson, Jade Thurmon, Meredith Burkhall, Carter Boothe and Maddie Frederick taking home the top prize. Carleton and Jacobson each drained half-court shots to seal the win for their team.
In the much-anticipated slam dunk contest, both Wigginton and Cameron Lard advanced to the finals. Lard's original dunk was a real crowd pleaser as he cleared 6-foot-6 Terrence Lewis on his way to the hoop. In the finals, Wigginton took note from Lard in round one and chose to take flight over the 6-foot-9 Lard homself for the slam. His dunk could not be outdone as he earned the title of Hilton Madness Slam Dunk Champion.
The two squads capped off Hilton Madness by splitting into Cardinal and Gold teams to compete in a 12-minute scrimmage. The Gold team would take the crown, 31-30 in a contest that came down to the last shot.
The Cyclone women will be in action for the first time on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. with an exhibition game against Southwest Baptist, while the men take on Alabama State in their season opener on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
