AMES, Iowa – The build up to the 2018 cross country season continued with the release of the USTFCCA Preseason National Rankings. The ISU Men check in at No. 5 nationally, which is the program's highest preseason ranking in school history.
On Monday, it was announced that both the Iowa State men's and women's cross country teams were ranked No. 1 in the Midwest Region.
Iowa State Director of Men's and Women's Track and Cross Country, Martin Smith's team is fresh off a historic postseason in 2017. The Cyclones won their first ever Big 12 Championship, a NCAA Regional title and posted a top-10 finish (7th) at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
Smith's team will be led by 2017 All-Americans Andrew Jordan and Edwin Kurgat. Kurgat, a transfer from UT-Martin, took 21st individually at last year's national finals, while Jordan finished just ahead of him in 15th.
ISU also returns 2017 All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region performers Dan Curts, Milo Greder and Stanley Langat, along with 2016 Big 12 Freshman of the Year Thomas Pollard. Another Cyclone to watch will be freshman Chad Johnson, a state record holder from Ohio.
Smith and the ISU men will open the 2018 cross country season at the Hawkeye Invitational. Competition for the Cyclone men will begin at the Ashton Cross Country Course at 6:45 p.m.
