AMES, Iowa – Iowa State added to its throws group with the addition of UNI transfer Cam Jones, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jeremy Sudbury announced Friday.
"Cam can make an immediate impact on our program," Sudbury said. "He will bring a ton of energy and enthusiasm for what we are trying to build and he will play a big role for us. I am excited to have him be a leader for the throws group."
Jones comes to ISU with strong performances across the throwing events. Outdoors, the Marion, Iowa native qualified for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships West Preliminaries in the discus, setting a personal best 176-10 (53.91m) at the Illinois State Invitational. He also boasts a personal best of 199-11 (60.93m) in the hammer throw, which he got at the South Dakota Tune-Up in May. Jones finished fourth in the hammer throw and fifth in the discus at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships.
Indoors, Jones owns personal bests of 62-0 1/4 (18.90m) in the weight throw and 55-11 1/4 (17.05m) in the shot put. He scored in both events at the MVC Indoor Championships, finishing fifth in the weight throw (when he posted his PR) and finishing eighth in the shot put. His personal best of 55-11 1/4 in the shot put came at the Iowa State Classic in Ames this past February.
In his freshman season at UNI in 2020, Jones took eighth in the indoor weight throw at the MVC Championships.
As a prep at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Jones was a three-time qualifier for the State Championships in the discus, finishing second in 2018 and earning Second Team Elite All-State. He was a three-sport star for the Wildcats, qualifying for the Iowa State Wrestling Meet and earning Honorable Mention All-District and serving as team captain for Kennedy's football team.
