The Lead: After a Sweet Sixteen appearance last season, the Iowa State men's basketball team returns to Hilton Coliseum to begin the 2022-2023 campaign on Monday night. Tipoff against the Jaguars is set for 7p.m.
Storylines:
ISU has won four consecutive season openers.
The Cyclones have won the last four games when reaching 40 points before the opponent.
Iowa State is 12-0 all-time at Hilton Coliseum in games played Nov. 12 or earlier.
The Cyclones added five players from the transfer portal, while welcoming three freshmen and a walk-on.
Senior Gabe Kalscheur is the only returning starter for the Cyclones this season, having started 34 games last season. Aljaž Kunc started 10 games, while Caleb Grill started nine games last year.
Iowa State enters the season with three current players in the 1,000- point club. Kalscheur has 1,251 points between ISU and Minnesota, while Jaren Holmes (1,020) and Osun Osunniyi (1,100) did so at St.Bonaventure.
Year Two of T.J.
Head coach T.J. Otzelberger is entering his second season at Iowa State. As a head coach, Otzelberger has compiled a 121-76 record, three NCAA Tournament appearances, two conference championships and a Sweet Sixteen appearance.
Switching Sides:
Last week, IUPUI defeated the Brescia Bearcats 101-60 in an exhibition game at home.
The Jaguars were led by Freshman DJ Jackson who scored a game-high 16 points off the bench.
Against Brescia, IUPUI shot 63 percent from the floor and connected on 11-of-20 (55 percent) from three-point range.
The Jaguars delivered 26 assists on 38 field goals in the exhibition victory.
