AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team wrapped up the first day of the 2023 Big 12 Championships in third with 62 points, four points out of second. The highlight of the session came from the 1-meter diving finals and 800 free relay as their performances earned All-Big 12 honors status.
Joscelyn Buss earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors after claiming an eighth-place finish in the 1-meter Championship finals. The junior scored 267.90, marking her 10th Zone-qualifying score this season and her first career All-Big 12 honor in the event.
Lucia Rizzo, Brinley Horras, Corinne Guist and Ashley Bengtson made their jump in the 800 free relay record books from No. 8 to No. 2 on the all-time top-performers and times list. The relay team touched the wall at 7:15.87 for a third-place finish, earning medals for their performances.
Jayna Misra collected her sixth Zone cut during the 1-meter consolation finals, finishing out in third place (11th overall) with 265.65. The senior improved her prelims score by 5.05 points. Kate Mitchell dove to 13th place overall with 257.40 while Ally Blumenfeld scored 252.10 for 14th overall.
The 200 medley relay squad of Sophia Goushchina, Gabrielle LePine, Carley Caughron, and Trinity Kay notched fourth with 1:40.11 to begin the Championship while recording the second-best top performance and time in school history. The Cyclones were just 0.28 seconds behind the school-record time.
"It was an exciting night far for the Cyclones as our 200 medley relay team was the second-fastest in school history and so is the 800 freestyle relay, so it's nice to start off that way and get some hardware for the 800 free relay team," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "I thought the divers dove really well with three in the consolations and one in the finals."
PRELIMS
Buss led the pack as she dove to her then ninth Zone cut of the season with a score of 283.25, becoming the first medalist of the meet. Misra secured a score of 260.60 while freshmen Mitchell and Blumenfeld scored 261.90 and 254.70, respectively.
Day two events include the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 400 medley relay. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Both prelims and finals will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
